What Is Immersive Reading?

Immersive reading involves listening to an audiobook while reading along with a physical copy of the book. There are lots of benefits to this approach: listening while you read can help you improve your reading comprehension, retention, and focus. Audiobook platform Audible found that customers who read while listening to an audiobook were more engaged than customers who listened to an audiobook alone; the platform said that immersive readers read twice as many books as the average customer. 

Immersive reading can also be helpful for those who are interested in learning a new language. Listening to how words are pronounced strengthens reading, speaking, and vocabulary skills for new speakers.

 “This is how I learned English, actually,” explained one Redditor. Another commenter added: “I just started doing this last month, and I am hooked. I now strongly prefer this! I have found that I can read for longer without getting distracted. It’s quadrupled the books I’m able to read in a month.”

Designing a reading space around the immersive reading trend offers a beautiful way to cozy up with your favorite books. We spoke to two design experts to find out the best ways to incorporate immersive reading areas into your home—whether you have an entire room to work with or want to create a space-saving book nook. 

Choosing a Distraction-Free Space

Immersive reading is all about improving your focus and literary retention. That’s why it’s so important to have a space that supports these goals. Cluttered or busy areas can make it more difficult to focus on your book, while a distraction-free space will give you the sanctuary you need to lose yourself in a book.

“A great way to create a distraction-free reading space in your home is by utilizing small areas that often get overlooked,” Quinton says. “Alcoves in hallways, dormers, unfinished sloped attic spaces, or a secondary walk-in closet that could be repurposed are all excellent options. These tucked-away spaces naturally lend themselves to quiet and focus.” 

If you’re transforming a section of a bigger room into an immersive reading space, Valkovics has some suggestions. “When in a larger room, you can create custom built-ins within the architecture of your room or simply use a great lounge chair and ottoman or chair and a half,” she says. 

“These reading zones aren't large areas and can be right next to a bookcase, in a corner window with a great view, or in an office or bedroom.” The latter two rooms are low-traffic, relaxing spaces that will naturally put you in the right state of mind for focusing on a book, even if you take over a small part of the room with a low-key sitting area. 

What if you want a fully-fledged reading room all to yourself? “Adding a small outdoor structure, sometimes referred to as a she-shed, is another great way to create a quiet retreat that is separate from the rest of the home,” Quinton recommends. “Even being a few steps outside can make it feel like a true escape, helping you slow down and focus.”

Decorating Your Immersive Reading Space

The decor you choose for your reading area also plays a large role in how well you can focus on your book. Quinton says that it’s important to give your reading space its own look, so that you instantly feel ready to sink into a book as soon as you walk in. “The vibe of the space can be a far departure from the rest of the home, as a reading nook should be its own space with its own identity,” she explains. 

“Consider incorporating color and pattern into the space. A well-designed reading room should be inviting and inspiring, so don’t be afraid to take a risk with the colors you choose and the aesthetic direction.”

Valkovics highlights a few key accessories you need for your reading area: “To me, the most beautiful reading nooks are the ones that draw you in and invite you to escape! Wherever it is, you need a good side table for your beverage of choice, and you should always have great lighting.”

Need a little mood lighting inspiration? Quinton recommends the following: “Consider overhead lighting, lamps, and sconces, and be sure to add a dimmer to all your lighting.” 

Soundproofing Your Space for a Focused Experience

Since a key part of the immersive reading trend is listening to an audiobook while you read, you want to make sure that your reading space is quiet. Whether you’re a fan of noise-canceling headphones or want to set up speakers around your book nook, a little bit of soundproofing goes a long way.

Quinton says that the first step to a soundproofed reading room is nailing down its location. “It is key to choose an area that is quiet, tucked away, and removed from the hustle and bustle of the home,” she says. “The best dedicated reading spaces are not near the main living area.”

Once you have a low-traffic space picked out, it’s time to soundproof the room itself. You don’t need any fancy audio paneling to do so; the decor of your room can dampen the sounds coming into your room. “Some ways to help a room acoustically are to add drapery, fully upholstered pieces, carpet, or rugs,” Valkovics says. “[If] it still feels ‘tinny,’ you can use felted floor lamps or wall covering.”

Quinton adds that cushions, pillows, and throw blankets can all help make your space quieter. “Adding a lot of soft furnishings can help enhance both comfort and acoustics,” she says.
