• Use it sparingly. “Burl wood should be used judiciously and only when you want to make a statement,” says Morgan. The designer suggests creating a focal-point stand-alone pantry with burl wood doors or simply using it as an accent within your space with cabinet door insets.
• Pay attention to paint undertones. “A great way to use burl is on island cabinetry while keeping the perimeter cabinets simple,” says Simone. “It lets the wood shine as a statement feature without taking over the whole room,” Morgan suggests a white paint with yellow undertones like Benjamin Moore Dove White OC-17.
• Consider natural materials. As with the perimeter cabinets, taking a more quiet point of view for countertops and hardware finishes will also be key. “Pair with a subtle quartz or marble-looking counter and warm metals like brass to complement its warmer tones,” advises Simone. Morgan is also a fan of antique brass or bronze metals for pairing with burl wood, as they can draw out and accentuate the wood’s rich patterns.
• Just go for uppers. “You can use burl selectively on upper cabinets so it doesn’t dominate the entire space,” says Simone. “Mixing it with painted cabinetry in a warm neutral, or even in darker, more dramatic tones like trending burgundy or eggplant, keeps the kitchen balanced while still letting the texture be the star.”
• Look to the details. “A subtle way to bring in burl is through smaller cabinetry elements like integrated pulls, handle details, or narrow trim panels on otherwise simple doors,” says Simone. “It adds a hint of pattern and craftsmanship without committing the entire kitchen to a bold surface.” When used in this type of application, the cabinet pro suggests pairing it with a softer-toned wood and subtle stone countertop to create an intentional, refined feel—rather than one that reads overpowering.
• Don’t let countertops compete. Morgan says that when you’re incorporating burl wood into your cabinetry, the countertops need to be more complementary. “Options like soft neutral marbles or soapstone offer a quiet contrast while allowing the uniqueness of the wood to be the star of the show.”
