This One Upgrade Can Make Your Bedroom (and Mornings) Feel Like a Luxury Hotel

Why High-Quality Bedding Matters

Wondering if the investment is worth it? Our experts share the benefits of high-quality bedding.

It Could Lead to a More Restorative Sleep

“High-quality bedding usually means high-quality fabrics made from natural fibers, which translates to more breathable fabric and fewer chemicals that can disrupt sleep or cause skin irritation (yes, that’s a thing that can be caused by bedding),” says Batten.

These factors can certainly lead to a better night’s sleep, but they can also set the scene for a calm and inviting retreat, says Christina Heiser, content director for handcrafted mattress manufacturer, Saatva.

It Builds Better Habits

Heiser makes the case for investing in bedding not only to elevate your space but also to help you start your day on the right foot. “When you love what you’ve purchased, you’re naturally more inclined to keep it looking nice by making your bed each morning, for example,” she says. “This small ritual not only keeps your space looking calm and put-together but can also support better sleep.”

It Creates a More Polished Look

While good fabrics can wick away moisture and help regulate body temperature, potentially leading to a better night’s sleep, aesthetics play a part, too. Isfira Jensen, CEO and principal designer of Jensen & Co. Interiors, agrees, saying the benefits of well-made bedding can extend beyond aesthetics, as these high-quality fabrics typically stay fluffier, are less prone to wrinkling, and hold their shape better. The result? A more polished look with less effort.

How to Build the Perfect Bed

Making the perfect bed starts with laying a solid foundation that you can customize with personalized touches to suit your style and preferences.

Mattress Pad, Protector, or Topper: We all remember the story of The Princess and the Pea, so it likely comes as no surprise that what’s at the base of your bedding formula matters. Consider the fill types and materials of your mattress pad, protector, or topper carefully. Batten suggests opting for natural fills for greater breathability and a plush feel, or for a high-quality synthetic for easier care and greater durability.

Sheets: Weave and material matter. Consider your climate and sleep needs when selecting the best pieces for the job. “Since most of my projects are in Texas, I always look for breathable, natural fabrics (my favorite is percale for a crisp but approachable look) and go for simple white most of the time for a classic appearance,” says Batten.

Coverlet and Duvet: Additional layers are dependent on your style and climate. A light coverlet over the bed and a duvet folded at the bottom make it easy to add or remove layers as the temperature changes.

Pillows: Heiser suggests tailored pillows for your sleep style as the finishing touch. “The loft and fill make a big difference for proper support, so consider offering a mix of firmness levels,” she says. Jensen suggests two pillows for sleeping, Euros for height and structure, decorative shams, and a few throw pillows layered in to boost the decor. If you prefer a more pared-down look, drop the throws and stick to sleep pillows, Euros, and shams.

Mini Makeover Tips to Deliver a Hotel-Like Feel

Consider these thoughtful updates that can deliver a big impact.

Think About the Senses: Take all senses into account when setting the scene. “Lowering the room temperature, blocking outside noise, introducing a calm scent, and using blackout curtains or an eye mask can all help you replicate the restorative atmosphere of a hotel stay without a full bedroom makeover,” she says.

Double Up: “Here’s a pro tip; for an ultra-plush, five-star hotel effect, layer two duvets by stacking a lightweight duvet over a loftier one,” says Jensen. “The extra volume gives the bed that irresistibly cloud-like, high-end look you see in boutique hotels.”

Layer in Lighting: After you’ve completed your bedding overhaul, look to lighting to further transform your space, says Batten. “Most hotel rooms I design only have lamps and wall sconces for the lighting, which is what creates that cozy feel that luxury hotel rooms have.”
