How Do Steam Showers Work?

Steam showers produce and trap steam in a sealed enclosure, allowing you to sit or stand within the steam. They typically require a dedicated 240-volt circuit to power the steam generator, and many come with a built-in automatic flushing system to be used following your shower to clear the generator of any mineral deposits and keep it functioning properly.

Justin Caballero, designer and president of Revive Design and Renovation, explains that "at a basic level, a steam shower uses a generator that heats water to create steam, which then fills an enclosed shower space. The key is that the shower needs to be properly sealed to maintain temperature and moisture. Once it’s running, you’re sitting in a controlled, warm, humid environment, typically around 110–115°F. Many setups now include things like aromatherapy, lighting, and even audio, so it becomes a full sensory experience rather than just heat."

Why Is At-Home Hydrotherapy Gaining Popularity?

The main reason for the growing popularity of at-home hydrotherapy is that homeowners can take comfort in a personalized retreat within their own spaces. An at-home spa provides a place for a quiet, uninterrupted reset.

"Clients today are far more intentional about health, wellness, and stress management. In markets like the San Francisco Bay Area, where I am based—where careers are fast-paced and expectations are exceptionally high—homeowners are increasingly seeking ways to restore balance without adding friction to their daily routines. Integrating steam showers and hydrotherapy into the home creates a private, restorative environment that supports both physical and mental well-being," says Thecla Glueck, designer and founder of Thecla Glueck Design.

What Are the Benefits of Steam Showers and Hydrotherapy?

There is a wide range of health benefits associated with hydrotherapy. "Heat exposure, whether it’s a sauna or steam, helps open up blood vessels and increase circulation. You feel it almost immediately, your body relaxes, your breathing slows down, and muscle tension starts to release. Hydrotherapy, especially when you’re alternating temperatures, takes it further. That hot-cold contrast can help with recovery, reduce soreness, and even improve how energized you feel afterward. It’s one of the simplest ways to build a recovery routine into your day," says Caballero.

  • Respiratory Relief: Inhaling steam loosens mucus, helps clear nasal congestion, and eases breathing, particularly with allergies, colds, or bronchitis.
  • Muscle Recovery and Pain Relief: Heat stimulates blood flow to muscles, which reduces soreness, aids in recovery after workouts, and helps manage chronic pain.
  • Improved Circulation: Steam causes blood vessels to dilate (vasodilation), improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, and increasing heart rate.
  • Stress Reduction: The warm environment boosts the release of endorphins, reducing cortisol levels and promoting deep relaxation.1

Factors to Consider Before Investing in a Steam Shower

While a steam shower can be a beneficial addition to your home, there are a few key factors to consider before you decide to invest in one.

Installation

The installation process is one factor that can be a major deterrent. "It’s not a casual DIY project," says Caballero. "You’re dealing with plumbing, electrical, ventilation, and waterproofing, all of which have to be done correctly for it to function and last. In my experience, this is something you want a professional team to handle, especially if you’re retrofitting an existing bathroom."

New homes may be easier for steam shower installations because you can plan for it upfront, but this doesn't mean the job will be simple. Proper installation is everything. If poorly installed, it won’t hold steam efficiently and can lead to moisture issues over time.

Cost

Cost is another prohibitive factor to consider. Basic steam showers cost about $4,000 to $10,000 to complete, but if you need to fully retrofit your existing bathroom or you are interested in custom features, the price of the parts, product, materials, and installation can rapidly increase. Glueck notes that "the typical investment is approximately $15,000 to $50,000+ with high-end projects. In luxury markets, like the Bay Area, these jobs often exceed this range due to elevated construction costs and bespoke design elements."

Long-Term Value

One of the major benefits of investing in a steam shower is that it can increase the overall value of your property, making it more appealing to future buyers. This allows you to enjoy the relaxation and health benefits at home, while knowing that, unlike a trip to the spa, you will eventually see a return on your investment beyond the immediate effects.

"There is long-term value and ROI in incorporating a steam shower feature in a bathroom remodel," says Glueck. "A steam shower is both a lifestyle investment and a value-add to the home. It supports daily wellness—helping homeowners decompress, recover, and reset—while also elevating the overall experience of the bathroom. In high-end markets, thoughtfully designed, spa-level features resonate with buyers and can enhance a home’s desirability over time."
