This counter-depth refrigerator from LG has ample capacity, making it our top choice. The interior shelves and door bins provide generous storage space, including two crisper drawers, spots to store up to 2 gallons of milk per door, and a full-length drawer.

It includes an internal filtered water dispenser, which makes the outside look sleek and keeps door space available for condiments and maximizes fridge capacity. If you’re used to an external dispenser, you may miss the convenience of filling your water bottle without opening the fridge door. 

We found the door shelves sturdy and able to hold a lot of weight without cracking or showing signs of wear. The doors close with a strong seal to ensure the interior temperature stays consistently cold, and we experienced no issues with accidental openings.

LED panels located inside the refrigerator create a bright interior. We liked both the manual control panel and app-controlled settings for temperature management. LG’s ThinQ app provides notifications for temperature alerts, filter management, and other useful adjustments.

But you don’t need to rely on the app, either, as the fridge door alarm is loud enough to alert you if the door is left open.

This GE side-by-side refrigerator is impressive with its capacity and storage flexibility. The adjustable shelves accommodate groceries of various heights, and the interior is wide enough to fit bigger items, like pizza boxes. We love that the shelves slide forward to access items toward the back.

The door shelves can also be adjusted, though it should be noted that they’re on the shallow side. While our tester’s previous fridge doors could hold 1-gallon jugs, the GE can only fit half-gallon jugs. The freezer also has decent capacity and adjustable shelves; the ice maker takes up some room, but that’s expected with a side-by-side model.

We love that the refrigerator runs quietly—it sits only a few feet from our tester’s family room and they don’t find it disruptive. The interior is brightly lit, and the temperature is extremely consistent; over six months of use, neither the fridge or the freezer side have fluctuated in temperature. 

This isn’t a smart model, but for some (including our tester) this is actually a pro. Tech-forward models are often very expensive to repair and have more components that tend to break down quicker. We appreciate that this is a solid basic refrigerator from a trustworthy brand.

We found the refrigerator maintains temperature well and keeps items consistently cold with a control panel that is easily accessible on the front door. The main freezer has a divider for efficient organization, and the auto-close feature ensures doors shut completely when not fully pushed in.

The fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish is obviously beautiful—but this refrigerator also comes with plenty of functionality and thoughtful details, too. 

The LED interior lights make it easy to see—especially when you’re searching for a midnight snack. The glass shelves are simple to clean, and the door sounds an alarm when it’s left open for too long. We also love the touchscreen that alerts you when it’s time to change the water filter.

This fridge is a traditional model that’s best for people who value reliability and simplicity over high-tech features. 

While it doesn’t have smart capabilities, the doors are reversible so you can customize it in different spaces. The finish is a fingerprint-resistant stainless that shows some smudges now and then.

However, our tester used Dawn dish soap with a bit of vinegar and water, and this quickly removed the smudges. The shelves are adjustable on the door as well as in the main interior of both the fridge and freezer.  

Adjusting the fridge’s interior shelves would severely limit the ability to store taller items like a pitcher, however. The fridge has plenty of depth, but that also makes it more challenging to easily spot its contents.

Our tester evaluated the model with an ice dispenser in the freezer, which reliably creates ice cubes that store in a generously-sized bin. The freezer is roomy with plenty of space for larger items like frozen pizzas. 

This option is a bit noisy, which is less of an issue if you plan to keep it in the garage. This model is specifically designed to function well in cold weather, so it’s perfect for adding extra cold storage in your garage.

About the Tester: Our tester for this Bosch refrigerator lives in a two-person household, and the fridge was installed in her kitchen that has custom cabinetry. The refrigerator is primarily used for weekly meal prep, everyday groceries, and frozen foods.

This fridge has the perfect capacity for a two-person household, though larger families may find the freezer on the smaller side. The flexible shelving and adjustable bins allowed our tester to customize the unit to fit their exact needs.

Plus, there’s a FlexBar system at the back of the fridge which can hold food using the two included shelves. Other items, such as a carton of eggs, can also hang on the bar to free up some shelf space.

The crisper drawers have dual temperature controls to store various types of food or produce. The fridge comes with a water dispenser and the water filter is super easy to access. The fridge cooled consistently throughout the testing period. 

Similarly, the ice maker reliability created pyramid-shaped ice cubes. Our tester discovered a hidden drawer in the freezer that connects to the fridge.

It’s about six inches tall and runs nearly the length of the fridge, but it doesn’t come out when the freezer is open. Our tester isn’t quite sure how best to use this hidden drawer yet, but is contemplating stashing some cash in it since it’s so tucked away. 

The fridge arrived with some cosmetic damage and doesn’t have a fingerprint-resistant finish. We used a stainless steel cleaner on the exterior and Mr. Clean for the interior shelves, so clean up wasn’t complicated.

The open door alarm was loud and annoying to our tester, despite adjusting the sound, so they ended up turning off this feature entirely. Despite these minor issues, the thoughtful features and excellent interior organization added up to a great value overall.

The fridge doesn’t come with any WiFi connectivity or other smart features, but our tester appreciated the simplicity and classic design. Its nine shelves and two drawers are all adjustable, though it was a bit challenging to install the condiment shelves initially. 

The fridge includes an open door alarm, but it isn’t bothersome and it doesn’t sound every time the fridge door opens. The fridge is easy to clean with a stainless steel cleaner. And it lives up to its fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish claim. 

Keep in mind that this model doesn’t include a water dispenser or tons of bells and whistles. However, it’s a classic option for two-person households that value adjustable cold storage space over smart features.

Our Testing Process

To find the best refrigerators, we looked for highly rated models across major appliance brands at various price points. We included various depths and door styles. Many of the fridges we tested have special features including water dispensers and smart compatibility.

We tested 14 models in our homes. We considered door configurations, the adjustability of shelves and drawers, and features like app technology, water dispensers and ice-making options, if they were available. We also tested each refrigerator’s temperature controls and alert systems by leaving the doors open.

What to Know About Refrigerators Before Shopping

Door Configuration

French-Door Refrigerator

French door refrigerators are the most popular configuration available, and for good reason. They often have larger refrigerator capacities overall, and this space is optimized as they provide wider shelving for large platters, sheet pans, and serving trays. Because the refrigerator is eye-level, it’s also easier to access fresh items. 

“This model conserves energy as you only open a small portion of the fridge to access a single item,” says Jessica Petrino Ball, an educator and appliance expert at AJ Madison.

However, there are some downsides to consider, including “reduced freezer capacity and less flexible freezer organization, as well as a higher price point and less door storage within the refrigerator,” Post says.

Side-by-Side Refrigerator 

Side-by-side fridges have full-length split compartments for fresh food on the right and frozen food on the left.

“The side-by-side models include more freezer space and visibility as capacity is spread more evenly between both refrigerator and freezer compartments, allowing consumers to spot their most-used ingredients at eye level,” Post says.

Shelving in the freezer can provide better organization, and increased door storage provides suitable space for tall condiments, beverages, and other small items.

“The two long doors are smaller in size, which reduces door swing to make it ideal for tight, galley-style kitchens,” Petrino Ball says.

Full-Door Refrigerator

Full-door refrigerators are some of the most affordable options on the market. However, there are some compromises. In top-freezer designs, the refrigerator is at waist-level, meaning you need to bend to access lower shelves and drawers.

This might make it easier to forget what you have, leading to food waste. They also typically don’t have ice makers or water dispensers.

You can find bottom-freezer options, which are similar to French-door refrigerators. Keep in mind that these models “typically come in at a higher price point at selected retailers compared to top-freezer fridges given their modern design and large capacity options,” Post says.

Take into account that large door clearances require more open space in front of the appliance.

According to Ryan Post, a refrigerator engineer at Whirlpool, the size of your refrigerator depends on how many people are in your household.

“A general rule of thumb is that 4 to 6 cubic feet of fridge space per person is sufficient,” Post says. “For a family of four, about 20 cubic feet of storage is ideal.”

External dimensions are also important to keep in mind whether you’re planning a kitchen remodel or ensuring your new fridge fits in your existing space. Most fridges span from 28 to 36 inches wide, and many models are available in both standard-depth and counter-depth designs.

“‘Counter-depth’ is the distance between the kitchen wall or backsplash and the front of your countertops, which is typically 24 to 25 inches,” Post says.

Counter-depth refrigerators are ideal for smaller kitchens with tight walkways, like galley kitchens. “Countertop-depth refrigerators can also be a few inches wider or taller than regular refrigerators,” Post says.

Standard-depth refrigerators are typically 30 to 36 inches deep. These can stick out half a foot or more past countertops. While you forfeit a sleeker design, standard-depth refrigerators do offer larger capacities.

“The door is an efficient place to gain extra refrigerator space,” Petrino Ball says. “Many people place gallons of juice, water, milk, sauces, or dressing on the door leaving more space in the interior for large items.”

Finish can also make a difference when it comes to effective door storage, Petrino Ball says.

“If you want to store milk in a door bin, consider a fridge with a stainless-steel interior. These models will be more effective at maintaining uniform temperature throughout the fridge and door bins.”

Some newer refrigerators, like the Frigidaire Gallery GRMS2773AF and LG LF29S8365S, offer a dedicated drawer that will fully convert from fridge to freezer, which is a great option for families to store kid-friendly snacks at their level or hosts to use as a built-in wine fridge.

Most of our top picks include a filtered water dispenser and automatic ice maker. While these are convenient, many brands are moving toward an internal water dispenser and an ice drawer in the freezer “to increase usable space in the fridge,” Petrino Ball says.

Another emerging trend in refrigerators: secondary ice makers. “Dispensers with the typical crushed and cubed ice are being replaced by exciting new shapes like round cocktail ice, nugget-style bites and slow-melting ice shapes,” Petrino Ball says.
