With its mid-century modern style, the sofa is sure to elevate your space without overwhelming it. We also love that the modular design is moving-friendly—if your next home has a larger living room, simply purchase additional pieces to make the sectional meet your needs. 

During testing, we found the couch to be extremely easy to unbox and assemble. The parts were properly labeled and instructions were easy to follow. We were immediately impressed by the durable, stain-resistant fabric, and we were able to easily remove stains with our upholstery vacuum. 

The fabric is wool-like in feeling, which we found to be stronger than other couch fabrics we’ve encountered. In fact, our cats tried to scratch the fabric, and it didn’t snag or rip. However, pet hair tends to gather and stick to the couch, so we had to vacuum or lint roll frequently.

Thick, supportive cushions make the frame of the couch extremely sturdy. The plush cushion on the armrests prevents you from feeling the framing through it. Everyone that sat on this sofa agreed that it’s a firm couch made for sitting and not necessarily lounging for long periods or lying down to relax. 

While we didn’t experience any back pain with the couch, the firmness leads to some discomfort the longer you are laying down. The cushions softened a bit over time, which was a pro given how stiff they were, and we didn’t notice any quality changes during the six-month testing period. 

However, we were disappointed that this couch only seats two people comfortably despite being a sectional. Overall, we found that this pick is best for formal, small living rooms or entry spaces where looks and versatility matter more than plus comfort.

Those searching for a budget option will be impressed by the Vesgantti Loveseat Sofa. The stylish sofa resembles higher-end sofas with its walnut-finished legs and corduroy fabric. We were able to easily assemble it in 30 minutes, and all necessary tools were included. 

The package arrived in one large, heavy box—we found it was easier to carry the individual pieces of the sofa inside. Each piece was wrapped carefully and nothing arrived chipped, broken, or scuffed. After assembly, we were immediately drawn to its soft upholstery material and the comfortable, plush cushions.

We loved how the corduroy upholstery felt, but it trapped crumbs in the ridges and needed to be vacuumed frequently. However, it wasn’t difficult to clean overall. When we spilled water on the couch, the liquid beaded on the surface, which means there is some stain-resistance. 

The bottom cushions are plush and comfortable to sit on, but the back cushions are a bit thin and offer limited back support. Luckily, we didn’t notice any change in cushion shape, color, or wear after six months of testing, which are key factors when it comes to budget sofas.

During testing, we could feel the frame through the cushions in some places, and the frame setup felt more like a futon than an actual sofa. For these reasons, this pick works well in small offices or apartments, offering style and comfort for short sitting sessions.

I personally tested the West Elm Oliver Sofa and fell in love with the modern, minimal design with elevated walnut legs. It’s perfect for those who prefer extra firm couches—the online description is not joking when it says the firmness is a five on a scale from one to five! 

The White Glove delivery and assembly service was seamless. The manufacturer contacted us when it was available for delivery, and we picked the time and date. The delivery team unpacked in the room of our choice, fully assembled, and disposed of the packaging, all within 15 minutes.

Both the back and bottom cushions provide the ultimate level of support, which my husband found to help his back pain. Firm couches are known to lose their shape and support over time, but we didn’t have that issue with the Oliver Sofa. 

Two people can comfortably fit on this sofa, and we didn’t notice any bowing in the middle of the bench. It’s important to note that the frame can be felt through the armrests, so you’ll need plush throw pillows for extra comfort.

The polyester and acrylic fabric is water-resistant, repels spills, and vacuums easily. However, we noticed some pilling on the fabric after six months of testing.

Luckily, the light fabric has darker shades woven in, so I think this will help conceal wear as opposed to stark white sofas that show signs of wear quickly.

Expert Tip

Keyes says she loves pairing this style of sofa with two side tables and matching lamps for symmetry, plus using an ottoman as a coffee table. “It’s both functional and perfectly suited for small-space living,” she says.

Overall, we found this modern sofa to be best for small offices or sitting rooms where short-term use is expected. It’s not necessarily the best option for long lounging or movie nights due to its firmness, but it’s a great value and worth considering for those who enjoy extra support.

The Telora Loveseat by Ashley is the most compact sofa on our list. The attractive design has a western-inspired aesthetic, and it looks and feels more expensive than its price. The delivery team brought the sofa right into our home office, and it was packaged very securely. 

Assembly was simple and just required screwing in the legs by hand. The cushions are thick, supportive, and didn't sag, lose shape, or fade in color after six months of testing. We also enjoyed good back and neck support with the included pillows.

Due to its loveseat size, it’s best for sitting, reading, or short rests rather than extended lounging or napping. We found that it wasn’t long enough for the tall members of our family to lie down comfortably; even short users’ legs hung off the armrest. 

When sitting, the sofa comfortably fits two people, but it’s tight if used for lounging together. The loveseat is best for home offices, sitting rooms, or spaces that aren’t high-traffic. The faux leather material absorbs liquids, so spills need to be cleaned up quickly to avoid staining. 

When snacking, keep in mind that oily crumbs can also leave a stain. Pet owners, be aware that the delicate fabric is prone to nail and claw marks.

It measures in at 80 inches long, making it the largest couch on our list, but the built-in storage and reversible chaise—which can hold two full bedding sets—makes it practical for small spaces. We found it to be a good balance of design and function.

The frame is heavy, well-built, and feels high-quality. The cushions are firm yet comfortable and kept their shape throughout six months of testing. The polyester upholstery is a water- and stain-resistant material that repels liquids and vacuums easily. 

We were also fans of the easy delivery and assembly process handled by the Article team, which included unpacking and disposing of the packaging. And we never experienced any type of body discomfort, even after sleeping on the couch for two consecutive days. 

This pick is on the firmer side and may not appeal to those who prefer plush, sink-in sofas. Despite its firm cushions, we thought it was comfortable enough to spend several hours reading and watching TV. It even comes with decorative throw pillows for extra support while lounging.

The Article Ceni Loveseat has a sleek design that we think works well with multiple aesthetics. The compact sofa is best suited for a foyer, bedroom, or reading nook. We were immediately drawn to the attractive wooden base and slanted legs. 

During testing, we found that this couch works best in spaces that need a durable, stylish piece of furniture. The wood frame feels sturdy and well-built, and the upholstery feels substantial. The couch has held up very well throughout six months of testing, even with dogs jumping on and off of it.

The sofa is firm and structured, so it isn't the coziest option on our list. However, friends and family always comment on how good-looking the sofa is, and we enjoyed sitting on it while reading or talking on the phone.

Although the sofa is compact, we appreciated the 23-inch seat depth, which is generous for a small couch. If your room has enough space, consider purchasing the matching 35-inch ottoman to double up on legroom.

Assembling the couch was simple—we just attached the legs with the included tools. It was delivered in a large box and left in our driveway.

Keep in mind that the low-profile back hits at the shoulders and provides minimal support, although we never experienced neck or back pain during testing. The cushions are also firm rather than plush, which is ideal for durability, and we like that the cushion covers have zippers for easy spot cleaning.

Our Testing Process

Since 2022, we’ve spent over 5,000 hours testing 91 couches. Testers evaluated each sofa on its comfort, ease of use, durability, quality, and value. We used these insights to determine which are the best couches for small spaces.

First, we evaluated the delivery and assembly process—how the couch was delivered, the packaging, and whether it was easy to put together. During the testing period, we sat, lounged, and napped on the sofa for at least one hour per day. 

We made note of special features, including performance fabric, memory foam, and removable covers. To assess comfort, we considered factors including firmness, armrest height, cushions, seat depth, and overall size. 

Multiple adults, kids, and pets sat on each couch during testing for well-rounded insights. We reported any neck or back pain when sitting or lying down. Thick and supportive cushions are important for sofas, so we noted if we were satisfied with the material and fill of the sofa. 

For durability, we assessed how the couches reacted to liquid (absorbing or beading on the surface) and if stains were removed easily. Finally, we considered factors including fabric pilling, signs of wear, and cushions losing their shape or firmness. 

We also determined if the frame was sturdy, if the couch fits multiple people, and noted any changes in quality, including loose threads, bowing, or fading. We continued testing each sofa for six months to a year to see how well they held up over time.

We evaluated how easy it was to assemble each of the couches that we tested.

What to Know About Couches for Small Spaces Before Shopping

Dimensions

It’s important to select a sofa that is large enough for your needs without taking up too much available space. Couches for small spaces should generally be between 50 and 72 inches in width (but no more than 80 inches, which is about the size of an average three-seater sofa) to avoid overwhelming the room.

To measure properly, Fischer notes to leave enough space for accents including chairs, side tables, and coffee tables to make a space come to life. 

Keyes adds that she likes to look for pieces that will serve both function and flow, plus maximize the space without overwhelming it. When measuring, she advises leaving at least six inches of breathing room from the wall to make the space feel more intentional.

It’s also important to keep the delivery and moving process in mind. “I think when looking for a sofa for small spaces, we often do not take into consideration getting the pieces into our home,” Fischer says. 

“Small spaces inevitably have narrow doorways, tight corners, and limited access, which makes getting a traditional sofa into your home difficult," she says. "I opt for modular or pieces packed in smaller units to ensure the sofas I choose for my small-space clients can practically get their furniture into the space.”

Upholstery Material

When it comes to upholstery material, Fischer recommends choosing durable, easy-to-clean fabrics (including performance or stain-resistant textile) or quality leather suited to your lifestyle. Common materials for couches include:

• Performance Fabrics (including Crypton, Sunbrella, Revolution): Exceptional stain resistance, easy-to-clean, and fade resistant.
• Linen: Elegant, breathable, and cool-to-the-touch with a relaxed, natural look. 
• Velvet (cotton, synthetic, or performance blends): Luxe look, soft touch, and rich color depth. “Velvet is another favorite," Keyes says. "It has a soft and inviting texture. Surprisingly, it’s a great choice for homes with cats since they can’t really scratch it.” 
• Leather: Durable and develops a beautiful patina over time. “I love leather because it’s durable, easy to clean, and less porous than many fabrics. Over time, it develops a rich patina that only makes it more beautiful,” Keyes says.
• Chenille & Woven Blends: Durable, textured, and soft.

Fill Material

Fill material heavily impacts cushion firmness, durability, and overall comfort. “Polyurethane and high-density foam is usually pretty structured and more affordable,” Fischer says. “I find my favorites tend to be feather-wrapped foam and high-density foam by itself for its efficiency and durability.” 

Other fill materials include down and feather for a relaxed, casual look that may need frequent fluffing, polyester fiberfill for a price-efficient option that is usually pretty fluffy and soft, and core cushions, which are found more in commercial spaces or high traffic areas that need to maintain shape with lots of support.

Most couches for small spaces will have up to three cushions, with two cushions being the most common. During testing, we found that most couches comfortably seat two adults. Keep in mind that some of the smaller options on our list, including the Article Ceni Loveseat, comfortably seat only one person despite the product description listing two people.

We love the IKEA Uppland Sofa because it’s easy to clean. We spilled juice on it during testing and just one wash removed stains without a trace. In addition, we found the foam cushions to be nap-worthy: plush, bouncy, and cozy. The slipcover is stain-resistant, but if it needs a deep cleaning, throw it in the washing machine. Just keep in mind that it shouldn’t be tumble dried.

The IKEA Uppland Sofa has a durable frame, despite being a less expensive option.

A sleeper sofa is a great option for those without a guest bedroom. The Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa comes in 18 colors to match any aesthetic, and we found the upholstery to be pet-friendly and stain-resistant. The mattress easily pulls out and was comfy the first time we used it. However, while Joybird says the sofa can fit three to four people, we found that two adults max fit comfortably.
