Shea McGee Chooses Chai Over Coffee—and She Spent a Full Year Creating Tablescapes for Her Debut Cookbook

Q. What's your go-to coffee order?

I don't drink coffee, but I love a chai tea with almond milk.

Q. What makes you happy?

Being outside and being with my family makes me happy.

Q. What impact did your childhood home have on the way you design today?

You know, I grew up in the 90s, and we had floral sofas and a lot of plaid, and I use a lot of floral and a lot of plaid.

Q. When you're feeling overwhelmed, what do you do to ground yourself?

When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I love to work out or go for a walk.

Q. What does “a home that feels like you” actually mean to you?

A home that feels like me means I'm surrounded by lots of things that I love and feel sentimental to me.

Q. What are three underrated home items that you love that people are sleeping on?

I love a chic oven mitt that is like a double oven mitt that you can drape over your range. I also love a tiny lamp. You can place it on a shelf or on a console. And it's not about the lamp itself; it's how you use it so you can layer the light. I also love tassel decor, like a little tassel over a doorknob or on cabinetry. It's just so chic.

Q. Tell us about your debut cookbook! What types of recipes can we expect to see?

It's called Around the Table because it's more than just a cookbook: it is an entertaining book.

There's so many recipes, but I did them by season and menu. And there are so many beautiful tablescapes that we did that you can incorporate on your own. So even if you're just learning how to cook, I know you're going to be inspired by all of the entertaining as well.

I didn't just do a few tablescapes. I shot all year long, so it took me 12 months to shoot and develop this entire cookbook. So every season gets like four completely different scenes—and I decked them out. So you can take inspiration from those tablescapes. And then each scene has a complete menu. So if you're like, "I'm hosting a summer barbecue," you go to the book, and an entire summer barbecue menu is spelled out for you. And [you can] also get inspiration from the decor.

Q. What's your favorite recipe in the book?

Okay, so my favorite recipe in the book... I have a lot of favorite recipes. I make my chocolate chip cookies. I mean, I know that sounds basic, but they are very, very good. Also, I have this couscous salad recipe that I love. It's a garden couscous salad, and it's very herby, and you can use it as a side, or you could throw a protein on it and make it your whole meal.

Q. Are you a farmer's market gal?

Yes, but I really love to garden. I have a garden in my backyard, and I come alive during that season. I just go back and forth between my garden and my kitchen. And I love to cook with herbs. Everyone knows the basil on that [dish] came from my garden. Everything is like—it came from my garden. It just makes everything better.

Q. Do you have any herb hot takes?

I don't have any controversial herb opinions. However, I love them, and I feel like people don't realize that they could take any dish—and if you just pick the one herb that's in that dish and do it fresh on top, it's going to look like you're a professional.

Q. Who do you dedicate your tea to?

This chai goes to my husband, Sid, because he tested every single recipe until he was sick of the recipe... and then was back again asking for more! And he was up late at night doing all of the dishes, and is here with me at the beginning of my book tour.
