Honing the Flower Power Look
Once you have an idea of what you want the picnic to look like, search for the details that will pull everything together. Try putting disco balls in the centerpieces, making the place settings into flower crowns, and adding glitter confetti to the table. However, if you're hosting this picnic outside, make sure to use biodegradable confetti or consider leaving it out entirely.
Check out thrift stores for bright tablecloths, with or without florals. We want to keep the theme, but too many florals could clash or look tacky. If you incorporate metal into the decor, make it gold. Stick to warm tones and flashy vintage details.
Bold and Flowery Picnic Food
Although this menu is fresh and light, make sure you shop for everything a week or so in advance. You might need a few days to prep some of the food if you don't want to make it all on the day of the picnic.
A few days before your get-together, put small edible flowers in ice cube trays to prepare floral ice cubes for the drinks. You can put them in water or in the signature cocktail for the evening. We recommend serving the retro Bee's Knees cocktail at your flower power picnic. Not only is it yellow, matching the color scheme in a classy way, but it's also fresh and spring-y.
When deciding on the menu, we recommend foods that are fresh and bright, in color and taste. For appetizers, try deviled strawberries—strawberries with cream cheese frosting—a fresh cucumber salad, and a small charcuterie board with lemon jelly. Cucumber Tea Sandwiches and mini quiche bites are easy to grab individually and provide substance to the picnic. Make dessert a classic and retro choice: strawberry shortcake. You can also really step into the floral theme by adding edible flowers to the menu.
Pen Pals Crafting
If you want an evening activity that goes beyond the picnic, set up a pen pal crafting table and a photo wall for photos. For the photo wall, put up a backdrop and cover it with flowers and disco balls so your guests can take photos to commemorate the night.
The pen pal crafting table is for your friends to make handwritten letters to someone. Stock the table with blank sheets of paper and envelopes to write on and decorate with colorful pens, stickers, stamps, and stencils. If you have generic polaroids, postcards, or other fun things to add to the envelope, put them out on the table too. If you welcome your guests to the pen pal table at the end of the night, consider trimming a few little flowers from the centerpieces to add to the envelopes as well. At the end of the evening, everyone will have a small memento for themselves and something to bring a smile to someone else's face.
