6 Outdoor Entertaining Trends You Have to Try This Summer

6 Outdoor Entertaining Trends You Have to Try This Summer

1. Add Ambience with Layered Lighting

One way to create a festive ambience is by focusing on lighting. Michelle Durpetti, founder of Durpetti Events, suggests using layered lighting to set a party-ready atmosphere.

This approach includes a mix of string lights, lanterns, recessed pathway lighting, and dramatic uplighting for trees or architectural features. Smart, dimmable LED fixtures enable hosts to adjust the lighting to suit the mood.

Consider hanging lights overhead and placing them along tables. “Pendant lighting over dining areas adds a refined touch, while flameless candles and tabletop lanterns provide a soft, intimate glow,” Durpetti says. A major trend is projection lighting, where customizable light patterns or color washes create a dynamic atmosphere. For easy implementation, opt for wireless, app-controlled lighting systems.

When done correctly, layered lighting draws attention and encourages socializing. “In addition to lamps, layered lighting is key: soft, low-glow lanterns, twinkle lights woven through greenery, and downlighting from pergolas all contribute to a magical evening atmosphere,” says Cassie LaMere, founder and creative director of luxury event planning company Cassie LaMere Events. The aim is to create intentional pockets of light that guide guests through the space while maintaining a cozy ambience.

2. Upgrade Your Outdoor Kitchen

Have an outdoor kitchen? In 2025, the trend is to enhance this space and make it a hub for gathering and food preparation.

Outdoor kitchens are becoming more sophisticated, closely resembling indoor kitchens in both design and functionality. Key trends include smart technology integration, such as app-controlled grills, pizza ovens, and outdoor refrigerators.

Don't limit yourself to just a grill or stovetop. Homeowners are investing in custom-built cooking stations, featuring wood-fired ovens for Neapolitan-style pizzas and built-in smokers for barbecue lovers. Mixed-material countertops, like natural stone and concrete, provide both durability and style.

3. Get Cozy

Being outdoors doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort. “The principle of prospect and refuge posits that people enjoy being in cozy, enclosed spaces with long scenic views,” explains Kevin Lenhart. Create gathering areas that offer some shelter, such as an adjacent tree with an overhanging canopy or an open-sided pergola, while providing long sightlines across the yard to a focal point or distant view.

Comfort and flexibility in seating are key. Ensure chairs are comfortable and easy to move.

Encouraging your guests to relax adds to the atmosphere of the event. “There’s a lovely, casual feel to spaces that welcome you to rearrange them. They give you permission to relax and be yourself,” Lenhart says.

4. Try a New Seating Arrangement

The traditional seating of eight around a round table is mostly for weddings and business dinners. “Seating looks its best when it appears to be a part of a single cohesive spatial design, and not like a series of objects sitting on an unrelated surface,” Lenhart explains. Nearby tables, plants, lighting, or other features help integrate seating into a unified scene.

In 2025, consider trying something new in your backyard. “Beyond aesthetics, it’s all about creative layouts,” says LaMere. Traditional seating is being replaced by more fluid configurations like serpentine, half-circle, and horseshoe setups that encourage conversation and movement.

Traditional dining tables aren't necessary—you set the rules. Dining arrangements are becoming more experiential with long family-style tables nestled among flower beds, Moroccan-style picnics, and pergola-covered lounges. Adding textured elements—woven placemats, ceramic serveware, and embroidered linen napkins—adds warmth and personality, while unexpected elements like floral ice cubes and watercolor menus enhance the experience.

Dining isn't confined to the deck or patio. Joanna Buchanan shares her excitement about immersive outdoor entertaining by setting tables close to the garden, under a tree, or in a rose garden. “I am excited about immersive outdoor entertaining this year: setting the dining table up very close to the gardens, underneath a beautiful tree, chairs set in the rose garden—being as close to the plants and flowers as you possibly can be,” she says. Set your outdoor table as you would indoors for a glamorous setting.

5. Get Together Just Because

While birthday parties, holidays, and graduation parties might fill your summer schedule, the trend now is to find new reasons to gather.

“Wellness-focused get-togethers are also trending—outdoor sound baths, guided breathwork sessions, and alfresco metaphysical readings are redefining what a social gathering looks like,” LaMere says. Instead of focusing on food and drink, these events emphasize relaxation, connection, and mindfulness.

Events don't have to be formal. “There is never a reason not to get together, but it's so easy to have a picnic: a beautiful Indian textile down on the grass and some French bread and cheese,” Buchanan says.

Consider spontaneous gatherings if you have the essentials ready. “We do a lot of impromptu events for the children and their sports teams—and parents!—in the summer,” Buchanan adds. “As long as you have all the essentials at home, there's no reason not to throw together a party at the last minute after a great team win!”

Be creative, invite friends, and watch the party unfold. “Beyond the usual summer holidays, people are hosting golden hour soirees, more themed events, and garden parties,” Forbes says. Gatherings with fun dress codes and nostalgic activities, like summer camp weekends or tennis days, are becoming popular as hosts seek fresh ways to connect people meaningfully.

6. Try an Interactive Meal

Party planners highlight a popular trend in 2025: making the cooking and dining experience more immersive. “Gatherings are getting more interactive and experience-driven,” LaMere says. Rather than traditional dinner parties, hands-on culinary gatherings like cookbook clubs, where guests cook from the same book and share their creations, are emerging.

If your budget allows, hire a professional chef, or allow guests to join the cooking process. “Hibachi nights, pasta-making dinners, and tableside sushi-rolling experiences bring an element of entertainment to the meal itself,” LaMere adds. “These gatherings focus on making cooking a part of the social experience.

Consider using different areas of your yard for various parts of the event. Cameron Forbes suggests progressive dining, where guests move through different spaces outdoors for drinks, appetizers, and dinner, to create an interactive element in summer gatherings.
