I ate my first kouign amann (pronounced queen ahman) at a farmers market in Oakland, California. I will never forget the taste of those buttery, caramelized, incredibly flaky pastries (I often dream of traveling to Brittany, a region in northwest France, to try a kouign amann straight from the source). Since I’m not sure when — and if — that will ever happen for me, I decided to make my own at home. It was not only doable, but was just as buttery and flaky as I remember.
