IKEA’s 2026 Style Guide identifies joycore as a decorating style filled with color and multisensory stimulation. A maximalist’s dream, if you will. 

“Joycore is a celebration of play through bold colors, fun textures, and unexpected elements in a room. Think colorblock patterns on rugs, animal print cushions, and sofas with a personality,” Stark says.

The best part about joycore is that it’s deeply personal and will look different in every space. With bold pops of color as the constant, the way joy is experienced in interiors will naturally vary. For example, for those with neutral spaces looking to invite more color this year, IKEA’s Style Guide assures us that white walls and neutral furniture can serve as the perfect base for this decor trend. On the other hand, those who are already well-versed in color may seek to incorporate texture or playful, unexpected elements to bring more joy to their home.

How to Embrace Joycore at Home

Embracing joycore at home couldn’t be simpler in theory, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. After years of being told that neutral spaces and all-white everything are the only acceptable way to go, embracing joy through bold color can sometimes feel challenging. The key is to stop overthinking it. Joycore is about creating a space that feels personal and uplifting, not perfectly curated. Instead of asking what’s on trend or timeless, ask what genuinely makes you smile. This is one decor trend where being a little unserious is the whole point—so give yourself permission to let your inner child lead.

Naturally, color is the starting point. “Little pops of color can go a long way in your space – start with accent pieces, like a patterned throw for your sofa or a funky table lamp that adds character and charm,” says Stark.

Or opt for analogous hues, which sit next to each other on the wheel, for a softer, more harmonious effect. The palette you choose will set the emotional tone of the room, whether that’s lively and dynamic or calm with a playful twist. 

For a timely take on the trend, Stark recommends considering pieces in IKEA’s 2026 color of the year, rebel pink.
