How to Make Wax Cherry Blossoms

You can use any light-colored leftover candle wax for this DIY; just add pink wax dye to make the color of the cherry blossom petals. Alternatively, grab some light pink wax melts from a craft store. Melt your wax until it’s liquid, but not so hot that it's too warm to touch. Add a few drops of cherry blossom scent if you want your petals to smell realistic. 

You’ll also need a small branch with lots of twigs on it; this will become the "trunk" of your cherry tree. The bigger the branch, the taller your cherry tree will be. To keep things simple, opt for a small branch with just a few twigs. Lastly, you’ll want a vase or plant pot to hold your cherry blossom base. 

There are two ways to form your cherry blossom petals, depending on the size of the flower you want. The first is to take a small spoon and dip it into your melted wax. Allow the wax to dry onto the spoon, forming the shape of a cherry blossom petal. Pull your wax petal off the spoon and press gently into the center, so the edges curl inwards like a real flower petal. Then, attach it to a branch on your "tree."

How to Create Wax Blossoms Using Your Fingers

If you want to add a few smaller cherry blossom flowers for variety, there’s a simple way to do it—this time, you’ll form three petals at once. Pinch three fingers together so that they form a small circle. Dip the tips of your fingers into your warm wax, allow the wax to harden slightly, and then grab hold of your cherry blossom branch. Gently pull the wax off your fingertips and transfer it to your cherry tree. 

You can also make tiny cherry blossom buds for the ends of your smallest branches, so your tree looks more realistic. Simply roll a few wax scraps into an oval and press them onto the end of a branch. 

Add Cherry Tree Leaves for a Lush Faux Tree

Most DIYers stop once their branch is covered in pink wax blossoms—and not all cherry tree varieties sprout leaves along with their blossoms. However, if you’re going for a fuller look, you can also add green leaves to the display. A small amount of green melted wax will do the trick; shape it into petals with your spoon, then pinch the ends slightly so they form a leaf. 

Tips for a Successful Wax Tree

Before you dip your fingers or spoon into melted wax, coat them in a thin layer of dish soap or oil. This will prevent the wax from sticking. 

In the center of each cherry blossom flower, you can add a small dot of dark pink wax to represent the gradient center. Creator @bigbayart on Instagram used a brush with dark pink eyeshadow to create the center of their tree’s petals; you could also opt for a dab of acrylic paint or mica powder.
