Show me a bathroom in a rental apartment, and all I’ll see is a space that is nearly impossible to beautify. After years of renting, I’ve seen plenty of blah, character-less bathrooms—and I’ve been frustrated again and again by how hard it is to make your bathroom your own when you can’t paint, replace fixtures, or otherwise make any permanent changes to the space. Sure, you can get custom stick-on tiles and removable wallpaper and all sorts of fancy semi-permanent accents, but are you willing to spend all that money? And is it worth it for a space that you’ll enjoy for just two or three years?

Different people will have different answers to those questions, but thus far, my answers have always been no. I have so much admiration for people who go all-in on decorating their rentals (The commitment! The willingness to part with their deposits!), but I’m just not one of them (yet).

With my most recent move, I worried it would be more of the same. And then I realized that the Better Homes & Gardens collection at Walmart has tons of affordable, budget-friendly bathroom accents that punch far above their price point—and that make a major impact, even in a blank-slate bathroom.

I started with the most noticeable (and arguably most essential) element: the shower curtain. I immediately fell in love with the Better Homes & Gardens Embroidered Diamond Curtain, and was relieved to find that the collection conveniently also includes double-sided shower curtain hooks, waterproof shower liners, and tension rods so I could get everything I needed in one order. (Anyone who’s recently moved knows—you want everything you need as quickly as possible, and in as few boxes as possible.)

I love the embroidered curtain for its coloring and intricate (but not too busy) pattern, and it seems that plenty of other people feel the same way, because the curtain quickly went out of stock after I got it—but my back-up pick, the pretty color-block, boucle cotton curtain, is still available for just $20.

After the shower curtain, I considered the storage situation in my new bathroom: With just a small under-sink storage spot and a medicine cabinet, space was in short supply. Thankfully, the Better Homes & Gardens collection at Walmart had an attractive answer to that, too, in the form of the Jace Over-the-Toilet Space-Saver. I’ve never had one of these over-the-toilet shelves in the past, a decision I regret after setting up this one: Not only is it beautiful (I’ve already gotten compliments on it from visitors!), but it also was easy to build, has three shelves for storing toiletries, towels, tissues, and decor, and it’s less than $100 ($97, to be exact).

For bath towels that matched the dark, organic colors I was leaning into for my bathroom, I turned to the new Signature Soft Popcorn towel collection. To finish off the space, I nabbed the Ultra-Soft Bath Rug and a tidy matte-black waste basket, both in colors to match the other, larger items. Am I supremely happy with my freshened-up space, and the items that I can take with me on the inevitable next move? Of course I am.
