Scent is the reason you can step into some hotels and stores and instantly feel transported. “Signature scents are rising in popularity because they create the link between fragrance, memory, and emotion. Hotels have embraced them to create instant brand recognition; guests smell a space and immediately connect it with comfort, luxury, or escape,” says Mara Dumski at Pura. 

Homeowners are taking a cue from these high-end experiences and embracing signature scents in their homes. “People want their living spaces to feel just as curated and intentional as their favorite hotels, using scent to set a mood, define personal style, and create a fragrance experience that is personal and enhances well-being,” Dumski explains. 

“Fragrance is one of the fastest ways to shape how a space feels,” says Jeniece Trizzino at Scentbird. As more people seek comfort, escape, and luxury without leaving home, the appeal of a custom home fragrance continues to grow. “As people spend more time at home, they’re looking for ways to recreate that sense of escape and luxury. A signature scent makes a space feel curated—it becomes part of the home’s identity,” says Trizzino.

Scent isn’t just a finishing touch but a design element that brings a home’s personality to life. We asked Dumski and Trizzino for tips on finding your signature scent and insights into how to use it at home.

“At the most basic level, home fragrances fall into families, such as citrus, floral, fresh, woody, aromatic, and gourmand. Each one sets a different tone,” says Trizzino. “Once you know the family you naturally gravitate toward, the world of scent becomes far less overwhelming.”  

Trizzino and Dumski identified common categories and their characteristics:

• Citrus and fresh scents are identified as clean, airy, bright, and invigorating. 
• Amber or spice scents are cozy, rich, and enveloping.
• Woody scents are warm and sophisticated.
• Florals are soft and romantic.
• Fruity scents are playful, juicy, and sweet.
• Gourmands are dessert-like scents evoking nostalgia, warmth, and depth.

“Knowing these families makes it easier to match a scent to the atmosphere you want to create,” says Dumski. “Fresh scents invigorate kitchens and entryways, florals add elegance to living spaces, woody notes bring depth to bedrooms, and warm ambers or spices enhance relaxation zones.”

If you’re wondering what’s trending in the world of scents, Dumski says there’s a shift away from overtly sweet and sugary, or more “authentic” and “natural smelling” scents—coffee and vegetables, for example, are providing inspiration. However, Dumski says it’s less about what’s in or out with scent; the classics never go out of style. “It’s more about finding ways to add newness and a sense of discovery to those scents,” says Dumski, illustrating the idea with the example of adding cardamom, turmeric, or saffron to your pumpkin spice flavoring or mixing a tart black cherry with sandalwood and vanilla in a home scent.

Tips for Finding Your Signature Scent

“It all comes down to personal choice and the mood someone wants to create, because the most important thing in choosing a scent is how it makes you feel. “With a little smelling and self-awareness, it’s easy to land on a scent that feels both personal and effortlessly you.”

Start With Scents That Already Mean Something to You

“When selecting a signature scent, you should find fragrances you already love from elsewhere in your experiences, whether from hotels, nature, perfumes, candles, or memorable travel moments,” says Dumski. “Personal associations are the fastest way to identify a scent direction you’ll enjoy long-term,” adds Trizzino. 

Consider What Mood You Want Your Home to Have

“Mood can guide everything,” Dumski says, so it’s important to consider the goal of a signature scent. Do you want a home that’s energizing and enlivens those around you? Are you looking to be calmed and refreshed? Is your atmosphere warm and cozy? According to Trizzino, your scent should match the feeling you’re trying to create.

Consider Your Environment and Climate

“Where you live affects how fragrance behaves,” says Trizzino, noting that factors such as the climate and season are influential environmental factors. “Lighter, fresher scents thrive in humid or warm environments, while rich woods and ambers feel cozy in cooler seasons,” notes Dumski. 

Pay Attention to What You Don’t Like

“Just as important as knowing what you love is recognizing what you don’t,” Dumksi says. “Recognizing what scents you don’t like allows you to avoid those scent families and narrow down your selections as you work toward identifying a signature scent.”

Test the Scents

Like testing a paint color or seeing a bedspread next to a headboard, Trizzino says scents smell different in the store than they do at home–it’s important to give them a trial. “Try samples in the areas you want to scent and live with them for a day or two. It becomes very clear, very quickly, which scents truly fit your space,” says Trizzino.

Also, think about the test audience. If you want the scent to appeal to more than just your household members, Trizzino recommends testing scents when company is expected. “I personally want a signature scent that is pleasing to a wide range of people.”

When it comes time to imbue your home with a signature scent, where you place it and how you disperse it are key factors. “If you’re trying to create a true signature scent experience, consistency is everything,” advises Trizzino. 

“Place scents where life in your home naturally unfolds,” recommends Dumski. Trizzino proposes creating scent anchor points to “help the fragrance flow seamlessly from room to room so your home feels cohesive, not overpowered.” 

The entryway is an important space. The signature scent has an immediate impact, enhancing the sensory experience of being welcomed. “That first impression sets the tone for the entire home,” says Trizzino. “In living spaces, fragrances help the home feel lived-in and loved, creating an invisible backdrop for conversations, cooking, and connection,” says Dumski. In bedrooms and bathrooms, a signature scent can “turn everyday routines into small rituals of comfort.” An adjacent option Trizzino suggests is a hallway leading to a bedroom. 

“There are so many ways to scent a home, and each one fills the space a little differently,” says Trizzino. She offers the following overview of distribution options for a signature scent:

• Candles create ambiance and offer a cozy, immediate scent payoff, but they only last as long as the burn time. 
• Reed diffusers are low-maintenance and give a soft, consistent fragrance day after day. 
• Plug-in and smart diffusers tend to offer the strongest scent distribution and can fill larger rooms more evenly. “I always recommend an electric diffuser because it delivers a steady, controlled fragrance throughout the day,” adds Trizzino. 
• Mists and room sprays are great for quick refreshes or layering scent. 
• The best method depends on the mood you want to create. There’s no one-size-fits-all.

There are two additional options to consider: wax melts produce a stronger, longer-lasting scent than candles thanks to the wax burner, while burning incense offers a robust initial scent release but burns fairly quickly and doesn’t last as long.
