Tart Orange Is the Summer Shade That Works Surprisingly Well in Any Space

The most vibrant variations read as playful and punchy—ideal for accents rather than entire rooms. On the quiet end of the spectrum, orange behaves like a cozy neutral, adding depth and glow. Splashed across surfaces and accessories, the color establishes a sunny disposition, no matter the locale.

With its connection to nature, orange can feel grounded and earthy: less traffic cone, more terra-cotta pot left in the sun. The emotional result is both uplifting in the morning—especially with plenty of natural light—and warm and comforting at sunset, says Pablo López Navarro of Casa Josephine, an interior design studio based in Madrid, Spain. In this apartment, shades of orange drench the space in rich, dynamic color.

In the dining area, an orange tapestry with a floral motif brings joy to the sunlit space. The tapestry is a re-interpretation of a design called 'Blossom' by Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman from 1972.

To prevent the hue from tipping too sweet, it’s offset with crisp whites and creams, a polka-dot carpet, and soft pink on the striped banquette upholstery, a strategy that keeps the palette poised rather than juvenile. Tubular chrome seating creates modern contrast to the warm color scheme.

Paired with brass and other metals, orange takes center stage, becoming “bold and super chic,” López Navarro says. In this small guest bathroom, warm metallic finishes act as visual ballast, grounding the hue so the result isn’t overly formal but still packs a surprise. The effect is enhanced by the shade’s subtle red undertones, which can be easier to combine than yellow oranges, he says.
