Lagom Living Is IKEA’s Answer to a More Peaceful, Practical Home in 2026

Lagom Living Is IKEA’s Answer to a More Peaceful, Practical Home in 2026

What Is Lagom?

At its core, the principle of lagom is about balance. Not too much, not too little, just the right amount. Concepts like sustainability, moderation, and practicality are central to the philosophy. Think of it like functional minimalism, if you will. While lagom can be embraced across all areas of life, IKEA is, of course, focusing on its impact on interiors.

“We’re embracing it through curating spaces that are harmonious and calm; places where you can revive and relax,” Stark says. “Think layered window treatments to create harmony as the day changes into night, shelves that are decorated only with statement dishware, and thoughtfully-placed plants. This style is curated through intention.”

Lagom vs. Hygge

Lagom and hygge are both Scandinavian lifestyle philosophies, but fundamentally, they could not be more different. Hygge, a Danish principle, focuses on creating feelings of warmth, intimacy, and togetherness. In interiors, this looks like cozy textures, soft lighting, layered blankets, and a general sense of indulgence.

On the other hand, lagom, a Swedish concept, focuses on balance, moderation, and functionality. It invites calmness and serenity through restraint rather than indulgence. In that way, it’s more closely related to minimalism, though Stark says it offers more flexibility than minimalism typically does.

“Lagom is the perfect center of clutter and sparseness—this trend integrates pieces with character and allows for a bit more warmth. It’s focused on comfort and spaces that bring peace through pieces that are functional and beautiful,” she says.

How to Embrace the Lagom Living Look

If the concept of lagom speaks to you, there are a few key principles that can help you embrace it in your home. First, Stark notes that your color palette is important. Muted, earthy colors are a staple of the look, inviting serenity and sophistication without the visual overwhelm that bold colors often lend. Crisp whites and greys are also a no-go in this style. Instead, stick to warm neutral colors and nature-inspired hues such as creamy whites, sandy beiges, muddy browns, forest greens, and deep blues.

Next, invite nature in with contrasting natural materials to build character. After all, what’s more relaxing than spending time in nature itself? Focus on materials like wood, stone, natural fabrics, rattan, raw metal, and greenery to foster a sense of warmth, peace, and connection to nature. Take your time sourcing and integrating these new pieces—well-made, high-quality items that can stand the test of time are fundamental to the lagom philosophy; choose everything with intention.

Cut Clutter, But Not Too Much

Lastly, remember that lagom is about striking the right balance between meaningful clutter and sparseness. It’s a step above the “less is more” mantra that defines minimalism, yet it rejects excessive ornamentation and clutter all the same, Stark says. Under the lagom aesthetic, decor is purposeful, practical, and intentional; every piece has its purpose.

As a result, decluttering is an important first step in introducing lagom to your home. Take time to remove the items that don’t spark joy or serve a real purpose in your home, and then be selective about what you bring in moving forward. According to lagom, true joy and comfort can be found in restraint, in practicality, and in having "just the right amount." In a world that’s obsessed with excess, this lifestyle philosophy might be just what your home is looking for in 2026.
