Adler's New Collection Puts Crafting at the Center

The Jonathan Adler x Michaels collection spans home decor, crafting kits, and entertaining essentials, all natural fits for the designer. “I’m a craft person first and foremost. Craft is who I am and what I do; it’s in my blood," Adler says. "And Michaels, to me, is the icon of crafting. It’s sort of like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. There’s no place like home.”

Among the highlights of the collection are guided crafts, high-design “blueprints” that customers can personalize, table settings, accent pieces, outdoor games, and decorative frames. Adler says some of his personal favorites in the collection include the paint-your-own pottery, as well as “some really hot pillows in the mix that will be on my sofa soon.”

“I want people to express themselves,” the designer adds. “The collection is a reflection of how I’ve always defined my style, which is a mix of sensibilities we call pop, natural, and deluxe. The pop sensibility is more creative, graphic, young, and fun. Natural is more like California living, cool, low-key, natural colors, and crafty. And deluxe is Park Avenue, fancy pants, Palm Beach-y. Those are the three sides of me.”

Accessible Accents at Their Finest

Another point of pride Adler has in the new collection is its average price point; the items are “at really accessible price points that I hope people see and are happy to inject a bit of color and creativity into their lives,” he says.

Despite the accessible pricing, Adler says the collection doesn’t compromise on quality, nor is it “toned down” from his typically irreverent “Modern American Glamour” aesthetic.

“The collection is pure JA, and ain't nothing toned down, nor should it be,” he says.
