"Waiting to carve pumpkins allows you to avoid early rot and decay, especially in warmer temperatures," Duford says.

Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Carved Pumpkins

There are several factors that affect the lifespan of carved pumpkins. They include the climate you live in, the condition of the pumpkins before they are carved, where they are stored, and whether they are exposed to a heat source such as candles. To make sure your carved decorations stay fresh for as long as possible—no matter the climate you live in—Duford shares the following tips:

• Start with firm and undamaged pumpkins. When choosing pumpkins for carving, make sure they don't have any soft or moldy spots, the rind is hard and there are no cracks, and the stem is firmly attached.
• Once you carve a pumpkin, Duford recommends keeping the cut surfaces clean by wiping them with a disinfectant such as diluted bleach, which will kill any bacteria.
• In addition to cleaning cut surfaces, you'll want to spray them with a sealant which will slow down the carved pumpkin's drying process. The expert suggests using a sealant such as clear polyurethane, vegetable oil, or petroleum jelly.
• Instead of using a flickering candle inside your jack-o'-lantern, opt for LED lights instead. Duford says it's best to avoid heat sources like candles because they can cause pumpkins to rot faster.
• Shield carved pumpkins from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, storing them in a cool, shaded area when possible.
