Ina Garten’s Go-To Game Day Dip Is a Crowd Pleaser and Easy to Prep

How to Make Ina Garten’s Pan-Fried Onion Dip

This creamy, savory dip requires just nine ingredients, most of which you probably have on hand. The stars are the two yellow onions, which you’ll slice up and caramelize in butter, oil, and spices.

Once the onions are soft and golden-brown, beat together cream cheese, sour cream, and mayo. Then, all you need to do is add the onions and adjust the seasoning as you like. Black pepper and cayenne pepper bring the heat, but you could instead top off this dip with a sprinkle of paprika or chipotle seasoning before serving. The more spices, the merrier.

The result is a rich, smooth dip with a tinge of sweetness. Serve it up with potato chips, sliced vegetables, or crunchy bread.

Take It from Those Who Know

Your mouth is probably already watering at the thought of this caramelized onion dip, but Garten’s Instagram commenters seal the deal. Her post's comment section is full of users who have made the dip year after year.

“I have made this so many times and people are always obsessed,” said one commenter on Garten’s Instagram post. “This is my favorite appetizer recipe of yours to prepare; it is such a crowd pleaser!” added another. If Garten’s Instagram comments are anything to go by, you won’t need to worry about making space in your refrigerator for leftovers.

Want to complete the menu? If you’re looking for the perfect Super Bowl drink, Garten herself recommends pairing her pan-fried onion dip with her jalapeño margarita recipe. Both the dip and jalapeño margarita pitchers will join a large buffet table that Garten sets up for easy grazing during the big game.
