How to Set a Table for Thanksgiving Dinner in 6 Quick Steps

How to Set a Thanksgiving Table

If you're preparing a formal Thanksgiving table for your guests, consider including the items listed below. Remember, you can always adjust the list to suit a more casual setting if desired.

  • Silverware: Dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, butter knife, spoon
  • Glasses: Wine glass, water glass
  • Dishes: Dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, bread plate
  • Linens: Napkin, place mat, charger

With a few supplies and these how-to instructions, you can set a beautiful Thanksgiving table. Customize your Thanksgiving table setting with your favorite dishes and decor.

1. Decide on the Place Setting

Before placing any plates onto the table, think about using chargers or placemats. These can instantly enhance your holiday tablescape, but for larger gatherings or full tables, skipping them might save space at the table. At a designated kids' table, however, they can help catch messy spills, protecting your tablecloth from gravy stains or cranberry sauce drips.

2. Layer the Plates

After deciding on placemats or chargers, begin setting your plates. Start with the largest plate for the main course, then stack the salad plate on top. Handle with care if you're using fine china to avoid any chips or scratches.

3. Assemble the Napkins

Choose cloth napkins for a formal holiday look. Fold them into a classic rectangle and place them under silverware on the right side of the plate, or create a fun shape and center it on the plate. For a festive touch, consider rolling napkins into napkin rings.

4. Arrange Silverware

Silverware placement is key to a polished Thanksgiving table. Always place forks to the left of the plate—use the smaller fork for appetizers or salads outside, and the larger fork for the main course closest to the plate.

On the right, position the knife closest to the plate with the blade facing in, followed by a spoon. If you're serving soup, add a soup spoon and a dessert spoon to the right of the knife. Ensure all utensils are aligned with the bottom of the plate for a uniform look.

5. Set the Drinkware

For wine lovers, place the appropriate wine glass at every setting. Ensure each guest also has a water glass. Arrange all drinkware on the right side above the knife and spoon, positioning the water glass at the top.

6. Add Finishing Touches

Opposite the glasses, consider adding a bread plate or bowl with a butter knife. Make sure they match your plates in color and style for a cohesive look. Add a personal touch with DIY placecards or menus for guests to take home as memorable keepsakes.
