How to Hang a Bunting for 4th of July
Follow these easy how-to instructions to hang your patriotic bunting on your front porch (or anywhere else outside!). You should be able to hang the bunting in under an hour.
What You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Patriotic bunting
- Scissors
- Serger or sewing machine
- Thumbtacks or duct tape for hanging
Step 1: Choose Hanging Spot
Bunting flags look best when they are hung from a porch railing, along the roofline, or under each window. Select your spot thoughtfully, since the surface will determine whether you use are going to thumbtacks, adhesive strips, or duct tape to attach the bunting.
Step 2: Measure and Cut
Next, you should measure the length of the area where you want your bunting to hang. Then, cut the required length of bunting fabric, trimming excess fabric along the scalloped edge. Finish the edges with a serger or by sewing a row of stay stitching. If you prefer not to use a continuous piece of bunting fabric for this project, then you can purchase individual printed cotton fan flags and hang them side by side for a similar look.
Step 3: Hang and Adjust
Hang the bunting in your selected spot. For pliable surfaces, you can use thumbtacks or small removable adhesive strips to attach. Otherwise, you can use duct tape to secure the bunting.

How To Store Patriotic Bunting
Once the July 4th holiday is over, prepare your American flag patriotic bunting for storage. Start by shaking out the fabric in order to remove any debris, dirt, or insects that may be caught in the folds. Then inspect the fabric for stains. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions—some materials might not be suitable for dry cleaning. If dry cleaning isn't an option, then simply soak the bunting in a cleaning solution and let it air dry. After cleaning, iron the fabric to reshape the pleats. Then hang it on a hanger and store it in a clothing bag. Make sure the storage area is dry and climate-controlled.
