If you’ve ever cooked with a glass stovetop, you know how convenient they can be. Yet they can also be challenging to clean, especially if there’s any burnt-on food (hey, it happens!). To help, we reached out to Ryan Knoll, founder of Tidy Casa, to get the scoop on the best tools and tips for cleaning glass stovetops.

Knoll says the first thing to do is make sure the stovetop is turned off: “Trying to clean a glass stovetop when it’s hot is nearly impossible. Any cleaning chemicals end up sticking to it in a weird way, so just make sure it’s cool!” 

He recommends using the following eight tools in order, from gentle to more abrasive. Knoll adds, “Escalate slowly and get what you can with the least abrasive stuff first.”

First on the list is something you may already have at home: Dawn dish soap. “Never underestimate the combo of Dawn dish soap and a good sponge,” says Knoll. 

He advised applying the dish soap evenly on the stovetop, letting it sit for up to two minutes, then wiping it away using a slightly damp sponge and circular motions. According to Knoll, this tool alone may remove up to 90% of messes.

If Dawn didn’t cut it, try these non-scratch sponges. They’re sold in a 24-pack and have two sides: a non-scratch scrubbing side and a softer, absorbent side. Of course, you can use them on multiple surfaces like nonstick pots, porcelain baking dishes, and even your oven rack. The sponges are made from biodegradable white cellulose and have a traditional S shape.

Scrub Daddy is another popular household tool, and these cheery sponges come in a pack of five. Knoll notes they’re a good tool to use if you “want to step it up a notch” with your cleaning routine. 

Their emoji-style design is cute, but also practical since they’re a smaller, round shape that can fit into smaller items like drinking glasses. Use them with warm water for a soft, absorbent option or in cold water if you need to scrub away stuck-on foods.

Scrub Daddy also makes “a great combo that has everything you’d need to clean most things in a kitchen,” explains Knoll. In addition to three emoji-shaped sponges, the bundle includes three types of cleaning pastes from the brand. The PowerPaste polishes and protects more delicate surfaces, while the Tangerine Clean is more abrasive for serious scrubbing.

Diyself Razor Blade Scraper

For stovetops with tougher, cooked-on messes, Knoll tells us a razor blade will be “your best friend.” You may have one handy, but you can also find plenty of options on Amazon. Knoll says, “The trick is finding one with a good handle. That extra grip is the key to a good cleaning.” 

This handled razor blade is just $6 and comes in six color options. Note that Knoll urged a little caution while using any razor blade as it may leave marks on less expensive stovetops. 

Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser Liquid

If you’ve tried the above tools but they just haven’t worked, Knoll recommended reaching for cream cleansers. “These work great for that cloudy buildup the stovetops get sometimes,” he adds. 

To use it on your glass stovetop, Knoll said to spread the cleanser evenly on the glass and let it sit for a few minutes before simply wiping it away.
