7 Free Ways to Instantly Transform Your Space by Shopping Your Own Home

1. Rearrange Art

Artwork doesn’t need to stay in the same place it’s always been. Sometimes, simply shifting an existing piece to a different room (or even a new spot in the same room!) can completely change the look and feel of a space, says designer Krystal Reinhard. Better yet, if you have framed prints, consider swapping out the frames to make your old pieces feel brand new.

2. Restyle Soft Goods

Soft goods like accent pillows, throw blankets, and even curtains can be easily shuffled around to refresh your space, Reinhard says. Move pillows to a new location, transition covers to reflect the change in seasons, try new throw blanket and pillow combinations, swap curtains from two different rooms—so many possibilities.

3. Play with the Floor Plan

Channel your inner child and get creative with your space’s floor plan. No, we don’t mean knocking down walls or restructuring your space (although we love doing that too!). We’re talking about good old-fashioned furniture rearranging.

“Furniture doesn’t have to live in the same arrangement—or even the same room—forever,” Reinhard says. “Swap a side chair from the living room into the bedroom, or shift your seating to create a fresh perspective.”

4. Repurpose Old Textiles

Do you have a pile of old textiles and linens that just don’t get used anymore? Put your DIY hat on, and give them a new life with a bit of creativity.

“A forgotten tablecloth or curtain panel can become a set of pillows or a bench cover, adding unexpected texture and pattern,” Reinhard says.

Even if you aren’t handy with a sewing machine, these types of simple projects are usually very affordable to have commissioned from your local seamstress. If you’re feeling brave, a set of pillow covers can be easily hand-sewn as well, just like grandma used to do it.

5. Give Tired Pieces an Update

Similarly, don’t be afraid to reimagine old pieces with a bit of paint. Furniture, decor, and even artwork can be completely transformed with a can of paint and a paintbrush, Reinhard says. Add a fresh pop of color to furniture, photo frames you don’t love anymore, vases or pots, and more. To give pieces a metallic, antiqued look, products like Rub ‘n Buff are a DIYers best friend.

6. Forage Your Yard

Seasonal greenery and bouquets can add a breath of life to your home, but it’s no secret they can be expensive, whether you opt for faux florals or the real thing. Instead, consider foraging for greenery and branches from your yard for a beautiful, no-cost solution, Reinhard says.

If you’re not collecting from your own property, make sure you're always following responsible and ethical foraging practices: avoiding private land, only harvesting from plentiful, non-endangered populations, taking the lowest branches only, leaving enough for the plant to regenerate, and minimizing the disturbance to the surrounding habitat.

7. Shop Your Storage Areas

Lastly, don’t forget to check your storage areas for pieces of decor and artwork you may have forgotten about. “Basements, attics, and closets often hide forgotten accessories and collectibles,” Reinhard says. “Style those finds on bookshelves, mantels, or coffee tables for an instant refresh.”
