However, before you commit based on a couple of pictures, it’s important to ask a few key questions: how much it has been worn, whether the item comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home, and whether there is any damage (ask for photos). If you ask these questions beforehand, you won’t waste your time meeting with a seller only to find out you are not interested in the item.

It’s common for people to store their patio sets during the winter season, but when they try to move these tables, chairs, and loungers into the garage or basement, they might realize they don’t have enough space. That’s when they put these items on Facebook Marketplace at a price set to sell them quickly and free up space in their homes.

Clay Cary, senior trends analyst at CouponFollow says, “You can find great prices on patio sets, workout gear, and storage items, basically anything people don’t want taking up room all season."

3. Winter Sports Equipment

Kids grow quickly, so it should come as no surprise that winter sports equipment is commonly found on Facebook Marketplace every winter season, as parents discover that the items they bought the year before no longer fit.

“Winter weather gear, like ski equipment, sleds, and skates, is always a smart item to buy on Marketplace because typical resale stores, depending on where you are located, do not consign or resell these items,” notes Johnson.

It’s important to pay attention to how heavily the items have been used and the age of the sports equipment. While some sellers might have had this winter sports gear for only a year or so, others might be digging up old gear from their basements or garages that is no longer considered safe by current standards, such as helmets, which often have an expiration date.

4. Furniture

When homeowners invest in new furniture for the home, they might hold onto the old furniture for a while because it is difficult to remove from the house, or they might keep it “just in case,” only to find later that they really didn’t need it. Buying exercise equipment to get in shape is a great idea, but in some cases, it sits and collects dust until the owner is sick of it taking up space in the home. Oftentimes, homeowners pay more attention to abandoned exercise gear during the winter because they are stuck inside for longer periods and might have friends and family come to visit, making the home feel less spacious than usual.

“Winter’s a slower shopping season for big items, so sellers are more flexible. People want these big pieces gone fast, especially after the holidays. This is when the good deals start to show up. You might have the opportunity to get great quality for much less, and the seller gets space back,” notes Cary.

It has become commonplace for electronics manufacturers to roll out new products for the holiday season, so it is equally common to find a host of bargain electronics for sale on Facebook Marketplace as the holidays approach and following the holidays, since many people receive new phones, tablets, computers, and other devices as gifts.

However, Cary says, “Always ask for clear photos and don’t be afraid to ask questions. For electronics, ask to see it plugged in or tested to ensure it works properly, and choose a safe public spot when meeting with the seller. Also, most sellers expect you to negotiate, so don’t be shy, but if something feels off, trust your gut.”

Just as prices on holiday decor drop in stores after the holiday, the same happens on Facebook Marketplace, although the deals can be far better for secondhand decorations. “Once the holidays are over, you can find holiday decor or artificial trees for almost nothing,” explains Cary.

If you are picking up any electronic decorations, such as lights or light-up village sets, make sure they work properly before agreeing to buy them. Otherwise, you might end up paying for a dead string of lights. For this reason, always look for reputable sellers on Facebook Marketplace and walk away from deals that seem like scams.
