1. Peonies
Hoping to attract wealth this year? Make sure you’re planting plenty of peonies. “One of the several meanings and symbolisms of the peony is hands full of cash,” says Teresa Sabankaya, florist and author of Modern Floriography. “In Asia, the peony has been cultivated for its glorious flowers and medicinal roots for centuries, but they were a very expensive crop to grow as the roots were pricey. However, if you could get your hands on a few roots and cultivate them, you would have your hands full of cash when you sell the blooms as well as the gradual accumulation of more roots for medicinal purposes.”
In addition to symbolizing wealth, full, beautiful peony blooms will add lushness and color to your garden. They’re also a great cut flower, so when they’re in bloom, you can pick a few stems at a time to display in your home (and save on buying fresh flowers at the store for your centerpiece).
2. Colorful Roses
Roses are one of the most popular flowers for symbolizing love, but depending on what color you plant, their meaning can be much broader. While red roses typically symbolize love and passion, if you’re hoping to bring luck and good fortune to your home, choose yellow or even green roses.
“Green roses often convey good fortune, rebirth and renewal, and fertility,” says Tyler Francis, co-CEO and founding member of April & Ashley. “They bring with them a sense of joy and hope for the future to come–making them a unique and ideal choice for a variety of occasions.”
If you’re hoping to add more colors than green to your garden, turn to yellow roses. Their brightness will stand out in your garden, and help attract positive energy. “Signifying joy, friendship, optimism, warmth and good luck, you can’t go wrong with yellow roses,” Francis says. In a bouquet, they’ll bring that same warmth and luck into centerpieces in your home.
3. Alstroemeria
If you haven’t grown alstroemeria (also known as Peruvian lily) in your garden before, chances are you’ve seen it included in a bouquet from a florist or even a grocery store. This popular flower grows in clusters of blooms, making it great for cut flower centerpieces and bouquets.
“They provide copious blooms and will often settle into their place to offer many years of color, shape, and texture to a flower bed,” Sabankaya says. “And with their meanings of friendship, devotion, aspiring, wealth, prosperity, and fortune, they are absolutely a charmer at conveying messages in the language of flowers.”
4. Pussy Willow
Add interest to your garden when flowers aren’t in bloom and attract positive energy by planting a pussy willow (Salix discolor). “In Asian traditions, pussy willow is a symbol of luck, prosperity, good fortune, and love,” Sabankaya says. “Their fluffy and silvery buds, which resemble kitten paws (hence ‘pussy’ willow), are thought to represent silver, or an abundance of fortune. Additionally, their branches are pliable and resilient, which symbolizes the plant’s ability to move freely amongst diverse and challenging environments.”
Before planting, keep in mind that pussy willows can be aggressive growers. The roots are known to spread out, sometimes more than 10 feet, so if you choose to add it to your garden, be sure it’s far away from septic tanks, sewer lines, or building foundations that could be damaged by the roots.
5. Spruce Pine
Planting an evergreen in your yard is a great way to add positive energy throughout the year. They’ll add green color to your garden, even in winter, and most can thrive in less than ideal growing conditions, which contributes to their symbolism and meaning. “The spruce pine [Pinus glabra] is a shade-tolerant evergreen that will grow in most environments, including moist soils where most other pines will struggle, hence its meaning in the language of flowers, hope in adversity,” Sabankaya says.
